Martha by Mail commissioned these exquisite plates many years ago from a Japanese manufacturer known for its delicate & prized porcelain. Bordered with a jade green rim, each 8 1/4 inch plate is given gilded edges & a scalloped border on the inner rim. Perfectly centered is a golden star that is unlike any other I've ever seen. It brings to mind some of the designs used by England's finest china manufacturers from the late 18th & early 19th centuries. Dedicated and expert Japanese artisans skillfully embellished each plate with the fine hand of true artists.
Designed to be used for desserts, the plates can be combined with a number of china patterns. I love pairing them with fine white bone china from Wedgwood or elegant white porcelain from the Limoges region of France. Quite honestly, a white dinner plate makes the best canvas on which to showcase this beautiful pattern, but they also do marvelously on their own. Use them for a dessert course or for tiny, delicate nibbles at a cocktail party. A true collector's item sold exclusively through Martha by Mail, the Antique Star Dessert Plates are meant to be cherished for generations to come.

Such exquisite brushstrokes make each plate unique. The plates were inspired by a vintage pattern in Martha Stewart's personal collection of china.
I love this scalloped border. Such fine gilding makes these porcelain plates luxurious.

Hi David,
ReplyDeleteDo you happen to know what was included in the Wedgewood Queen's Ware dish collection, offered in the Spring 2000 Martha by Mail? We have most of the set, but would like to know what additional serving pieces were made. Thanks in advance for any help!
Off the top of my head I can tell you that there were several pieces including serving bowls, platters, a tea & coffee set, etc. Let me look into my "archives" to see what exactly was offered through Martha by Mail. I'll get back to you shortly!
ReplyDeleteHere is what I was able to gather regarding Queen's Ware tableware through Martha by Mail. These items were sold separately from the place settings.

Gorgeous! I am having such fun revisiting Martha by Mail on your blog. When it was around I did buy a few things, but I was in school and building my career, and it was pricy! But well worth the money, the quality was so much better than the stuff in the stores now. I am excited to hunt around online and see what I can find, especially the cookie cutters. Thanks for sharing David!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're enjoying it. I completely agree that the quality of the merchandise was so much better than what we can get these days. So many American companies & artisans made all the difference.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading along!
